My friend, minkymomo, sent me a link to the American Literature Abuse Society (ALAS). I can certainly check “yes” to most of the indicators of Literature Abuse. My favorite in the list is:

10. I keep books or magazines in the bathroom for a “quick nip.”

When I was growing up, our whole family were reading addicts. We kept reading material in every room of the house, including the bathroom. When we felt that our needs were going to require that we be in that room for a while, we’d say that we were going to the library. I was well into my 20’s before I realized that every time I entered a real library, I’d have to ask to borrow the restroom key. Only after I had attended to my childhood associations with the library could I relax and peruse the stacks for new reading material.
